What is the difference between THC and CBD?

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD for cannabidiol. Both substances are important ingredients in cannabis plants.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits. Because CBD-rich cannabis is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains, it is an excellent alternative for patients to inhibit inflammation, relieve pain, relieve anxiety and psychosis, relieve seizures and cramps, and improve other conditions without compromising lung function.

What is THC?

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical compound in cannabis that is responsible for producing a euphoric high. In addition to the primary, popularly known psychoactive property of cannabis, THC has other uses.

The chemical THC is the main cause of most of the psychic effects of marijuana. It acts like the cannabinoid chemicals naturally produced by the body. Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in certain areas of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and time perception. THC connects these receptors, activates them and influences a person’s memory, perceived joy, motor movements, thinking, concentration, coordination and sensory and time perception.

Why is only THC psychoactive?

When we talk about cannabis and psychoactivity, we are dealing exclusively with CB1 receptors (cannabinoid 1), which are found in large numbers in the brain and central nervous system. The difference between CBD and THC is how they interact with the CB1 receptor. THC binds easily to CB1 cannabinoid receptors. CBD, on the other hand, has a low binding affinity for CB1 receptors.

Anxiety

THC is known to cause anxiety or paranoia in humans. CBD has the opposite effect. Indeed, studies show that CBD works to overcome the anxiety caused by taking THC. A number of studies also suggest that CBD can reduce self-induced anxiety.

Legal status

While most countries have strict laws on marijuana and THC, the legal status of CBD is less clear. In the United States, CBD is technically illegal. A pharmaceutical form of CBD, called Epidiolex, was recently purified by the FDA to be tested in children with severe epilepsy.

On the other hand, CBD is found in hemp, which can be legally imported and sold in the USA. Some companies have made use of this gap by importing high CBD hemp extracts from other countries where hemp is produced.
